SUMMARY:WIP Screening | Sounds From The Peripheries
DESCRIPTION:The documentary series “Sounds from the peripheries ”\,  produced by Centre for Media and Alternative Communication and Bhooma\, New Delhi\, is an effort to bring attention to the livelihoods of folk musicians across the country.\n\nContinuing to battle the severe impacts of the global pandemic\, the folk artists are faced with an absence of platforms and mechanisms to perform and exhibit their talent. With rapid changes to recording technologies without adequate support for all\, the folk musicians are battling a constant crisis as they play catch up. The next generation is debating whether folk music is a viable option to sustain themselves and with that\, what lies at stake are centuries of collective cultural history. \nDigitisation of music while democratizing the process has thrown up serious concerns over the past few decades such as protection of intellectual property rights and exploitation of vulnerable communities through poor compensation . It is important to recognise the role of the artists that have made this music possible and ensure that proper mechanisms are in place to safeguard their interests. \nThe aim behind “Sounds from the peripheries” has been to provide a platform for folk and classical musicians to showcase their musical talent\, and to document and archive these rich traditions that are an integral part of our cultural diaspora. \n\nNOTES FROM THE FILMMAKER:\n \n“We traveled across the country\, to bring out the stories from under-represented communities in India. The Meghwals at the western most border at Harsani\, Barmer District\, Rajasthan to the Sonowal Kachari Tribe in Teporguri Village in Sohorikota\, Assam.\n\nWe traveled vast distances and uncovered diverse histories as we carried out our project. The purpose of the series was to also provide opportunities for employment for the musicians. Through such collaborations\, we provided professional fees to the artists and we worked on the films together. \nSounds from the peripheries\, aims to showcase the beauty and meaning behind the music. Acknowledging where the music comes from and in the context within which it was created before it is separated from the artist.” \n\nABOUT THE FILMMAKER\n \nNeelansh Mittra divides his time between making documentaries and designing sound for films and installations. From 2021-2023\, he worked as a director on a documentary series with the Centre for Media and Alternative Communication\, which was aimed at drawing attention to the rich and complex history of folk music traditions across India and the livelihoods of musicians who practice them. He has a graduate degree in history (Delhi University) and a diploma in creative documentary filmmaking (Sri Aurobindo Centre for Arts and Communication). A Scholarship Laureate of the International Programme for Sound Documentary at ENS Louis Lumiere in Paris\, he continues to explore different ways of working with the medium of sound through his practice.\n\nABOUT THE PRODUCERS\n\nParthiv Shah is a practising photographer\, designer and filmmaker who has extensively researched and published on the themes of representation and visual arts. He is the Founder-Director of Centre for Media and Alternative Communication (CMAC). An alumnus of the National Institute of Design\, India\, he has been awarded a senior fellowship in Photography by the Ministry of Culture\, Government of India\, Charles Wallace Fellowship\, UK and Fulbright Lectureship award to teach photography at the UCLA\, USA. \nVidya Shah is a singer from New Delhi\, India. An award winning musician\, she writes and speaks on music and is the Author of Jalsa: Indian Women’s Journey from the Salon to the Studio (Tulika Books). She was the Nana Shirgaokar Chair Professor for Indian Music at Goa University for 2016-20. She is the Director of Bhooma trust\, set up to preserve and promote the intangible heritage of India. \nCMAC is a leading non–profit strategic communications and advocacy agency. CMAC employs the aesthetics of media and art to create communication campaigns; additionally\, it produces education as well as advocacy materials on a range of socially relevant issues\, including human rights\, culture and public health. The aim behind “Sounds from the peripheries” has been to provide a platform for folk and classical musicians to showcase their musical talent\, and to document and archive these rich traditions that are an integral part of the Indian cultural diaspora.\n\n70% of the funds we collect are directed to the artists\n\n\nDate: 17th February (Saturday)\nTime:  4:30 PM Onwards\nVenue: Sri Aurobindo Centre for Arts and Communication (SACAC)

SUMMARY:WIP Sharing | Matthew Rahaim x Bariya | 14th January 2024
DESCRIPTION:Matthew Rahaim and Bariya (Ambient Electronic Deep Listening)\n(A Polyphonic and Polymodal listening of the city) \nPolymodal Delhi – By Matthew Rahaim \nChanneling Delhi’s sedimented history as a meeting ground of musical worlds\, the modulatory techniques of maqām take us fluidly through a series of rāga-s. We dwell in the dynamic umapped zones between modal structure\, finding spaces of poetry among the ruins of grammar. \nThe Delhi Polyphones – Bariya \nAn ambient set dissolving millions of polyphones emerging out of the city creating Delhi’s aural auroras! Electronically reading\, playing\, synthesizing from the paraphonic and polyphonic stays and hums of the city. The last imprints of the city’s contribution to the spheres of sounds looming\, gently surrounding it. \nABOUT THE ARTISTS: \nMatthew Rahaim is a composer\, improviser\, and vocalist\, grounded in the Gwalior lineage of Hindustani music. His work includes analog synthesis\, voice\, raga music\, event scores\, and electroacoustic compositions for new instruments. Recent compositions have been featured at the Wakpa Triennial\, Drone Not Drones\, and The Great Beyond festival. His current project\, Improvising Relationality\, experiments with ways of being both together and apart\, in empathic intimacy and vulnerable alterity\, exploring the relational play of mutual dependence and mutual freedom. \nBariya (Pratyush Pushkar & Riya Raagini) is an Indian Transdisciplinary Artist duo currently working on a deep polyphonic and fearless listening with more than a decade-long musical and sonic grounding\, disorienting (poetic) navigations and stays through everyday sonic reconciliations- uncovering constant queer bioacoustic-poetics that surround us.\nTheir works have found spaces at Akademie Schloss Solitude\, Germany\, Thyssen Bornemisza National Museum\, Madrid\, Audioblast Festival\, France\, Radhiophrenia\, Centre for Contemporary Arts\, Glasgow\,  Festival Sur Aural\, Bolivia and Festival Ars Electronica\, Linz\, Austria among others. Their larger project ” The Delhi Polyphones” has been funded and supported by 421 Arts Centre\, Abu Dhabi and curated by Sara Safwan (Curator- Guggenheim\, Abu Dhabi). \n  \nDate:\, January 14\, 2024 (Sunday)\nTiming:  6:30 PM\nVenue: Lilanoor Centre for Voice and Music \n70% of your contributions goes to the Artist.

SUMMARY:WIP Sharing | Agents of Malarkey
DESCRIPTION:“Agents of Malarkey“ is a performative project developed by Anish Cherian and Padmanabhan\, blending speculative research and sonic world-building that emerges from the absurd and the nonsensical. Where the extraordinary becomes ordinary. Within this theatrical experience\, rivers may transform into humans\, towering trees might become grass overnight\, and beings on Mars embark on the construction of colonies. \nCentral to “Agents of Malarkey” is the exploration of the bizarre and inexplicable elements of our world\, conveyed through poetic narratives\, mesmerizing soundscapes\, and experimental visuals\, inviting viewers to delve into the captivating and whimsical world of malarkey. \nAbout the Artists:  \nPadmanabhan\, originally an Industrial Engineer\, developed a passion for sound and music technology that began with a simple curiosity. He often tinkers with algorithms to create generative music and soundscapes\, while also trying to prevent his laptop from crashing. Using the stage name beatnyk\, he has performed at various events and venues such as GitHub\, Goa Music Lab\, Unusual London\, and multiple Algoraves. As a member of Whales For Climate\, he is part of a project that uses TechArt and AI to raise awareness about climate change\, which was launched during the BeFantastic Fellowship 2021. Currently\, Padmanabhan can be found working as a sound designer on various independent projects and collaborating with other artists. \nAnish Cherian is a Chennai based interdisciplinary artist and co-founder of Studio Clutter (@studioclutter)\, a woodwork-art studio. They use an assemblage of mediums from painting\, architecture\, performance\, creative writing\, and technology to articulate their practice. In their current work boundaries between nature\, human technology are blurred in affirmative communion\, to record memories excluded from the archive and by extension the “official” narrative of our reality. These minor archives inform a speculative post-human world they create through drawings\, listening sessions\, stories\, and music. They see collaboration and kinship between species and allies as integral in forming new languages and speculative possibilities. \n70% of the funds we collect are directed to the artists\n\n\nDate:  17th September\, 2023\nTime: 6:45 pm onwards\nVenue: Theatre 2\, Kunzum Books\, M Block Market\, GK2\, New Delhi\n\nTo register for this workshop\, please fill out the following details:

SUMMARY:WIP Sharing | Dhrupad x Ableton
DESCRIPTION:About the session: \nA sound immersion evolving from a pilot project by Sahitya and Harsh integrating an amalgamation of vocals inspired by the practice of Dhrupad\, a live set on Ableton Live for synthesizing elemental soundscapes and acoustic instruments used in Sound work. \nDhrupad \nDhrupad is a form of Indian Classical music known for its intricate and expressive structure and meditative quality. A key feature in our exploration is the emphasis on ‘Alaap’ in the practice of Dhrupad\, which gradually unfolds the emotion and builds up the intensity and expressiveness of the raag. The use of deep\, resonant vocal techniques that produce a powerful and earthy sound will further be emphasized by drone accompaniments and live evolving soundscapes produced using Ableton. \nAbleton and 5-elements \nThe pulsating drones and soundscapes are built around an elemental structure inspired by traditional Chinese medicine and Panchamahabhutas from Ayurveda. The five elements of Space (Ether)\, Wind\, Fire\, Water and Earth are associated with different perceptive qualities and senses making them a rich symbolic language to integrate the sounds of Dhrupad in the sonic environment. \nWhy this session \nWith the gradual unfolding of the soundscapes and melodic patterns\, we invite the participants to absorb the plethora of sounds to embark upon an experiential journey to dive into states of deep relaxation\, tranquility or even the release of negative emotions. We are eager to bring the depth and beauty of the frequencies and vibrations to bring balance and harmony within the inner self. \n\n\nAbout the facilitators : \nSahitya is a student of Dhrupad with Ustad F. Wasifuddin Dagar. She is a graduate of Music Therapy and has further explored the work of sound at Svaram Sound Experience\, Auroville under their Integral Sonic Studies Program. With a diverse background in music including Indian and Western Classical music in the form of Dhrupad and the Piano\, she is keen to explore the modalities of healing nature of sound and music. \nHarsh is a Math teacher and a Physics student who is studying sound and researching in the field of cymatics at Svaram Sound Experience in Auroville. He is interested in designing and synthesizing sound electronically using Ableton and visually representing sound through his research in cymatics. He is a graduate of the integral sonic sound practices programme at Svaram and has been a facilitator for many sound baths and sound journeys. \n70% of the funds we collect are directed to the artists\n\n\nDate:  17th September\, 2023\nTime: 4:45 pm onwards\nVenue: Theatre 2\, Kunzum Books\, M Block Market\, GK2\, New Delhi\n\nTo register for this sharing\, please fill out the following details:

SUMMARY:SHARING I Soul Seeking; An Electronic Music Improv I 30th July\, 2023
DESCRIPTION:  \nSoul Seeking; An electronic Music Improv by Vaibhav Batra and Anandit Sachdev \n\nAbout the Gig:\n\nIn “The Mysticism of Sound and Music\,” Hazrat Inayat Khan shares a captivating legend where God employs music to entice the soul into the confines of the body. Initially reluctant\, the soul views its nature as one of boundless freedom. However\, through the ecstasy induced by celestial music\, the soul ultimately surrenders and enters the body. This legend emphasizes the inherent freedom of the soul and explores the dualism of matter and spirit. It implies that the spirit willingly relinquishes its freedom to manifest in the material world\, enabling its self-realization. Inayat Khan asserts that this loss of freedom leads to a gain—the experience of life as an individual. \nMusic plays a crucial role in this transformative process\, allowing the spirit to recognize its true nature of freedom\, interiority\, and unity with the divine. Consequently\, music serves as a bridge\, connecting the external material realm with the internal spiritual world. Building upon these themes\, artists Vaibhav Batra and Anandit Sachdev propose a 45-minute audio-visual performance piece. By combining turntables and a modular synthesizer\, they aim to synthesize and highlight the contrasting elements of fixity and freedom present in sonic media. Vinyl records symbolize fixity\, offering limited possibilities for sound manipulation within their grooves. Conversely\, the modular synthesizer invites exploration and freedom in manipulating sound through materiality. Together\, these mediums collide\, rupture\, and synthesize soundscapes\, evoking an awareness in the audience of the freedom or limitations inherent in sound and sonic media. \nAbout the Collective: Antariksh Sound and Media Collective is a nebulous artist collective exploring sonic and digital media. The collective is part of Antariksh Records established in 2018.\n\nAbout the artists:\n\nAnandit Sachdev: Anandit Sachdev is a music producer\, DJ\, tablawadak and sound artist from New Delhi (India). He is also the founder of Antariksh Records\, an independent record label promoting underground electronic music in the Indian subcontinent. In addition to this\, he teaches questions of light and sound to architecture students at O.P. Jindal Global University\, Sonipat.\n\n\nVaibhav Batra (Psychopanda): Psychopanda is an emerging modular synth artist and live performer from New Delhi (India). With a keen ear for experimentation\, he brings a fresh perspective to the world of modular synthesis and what is possible with voltage-driven music. Known for free-improv live sets and experimental compositions\, there is an element of risk and surprise to his live performances\, something that’s\, often\, missing from electronic music acts. Other than performing at intimate venues in the country\, he has two formal releases under his belt. This includes a contribution to an ambient compilation that features the likes of Matt Black (Ninja Tune) and Jatinder Singh Durhailay (Petit Oiseau).\n\n70% of the funds we collect are directed to the artists\n\n\nRegister
